If You're a Nice Guy, Please Read This. »

It’s fine.

I know what you’re thinking. Nice guys finish last. Nice guys get trampled on, cheated, and end up getting the short end of the stick.

It’s alright.

It’s difficult to always feel these things and you could easily say that you want to just unleash the fury and be an asshole for once.

But the funny thing is, you can’t. Despite your attempts to not be nice, you end up doing nice anyway. Why? Because being nice is a physiological desire to you. Being nice is not a switch that you can turn on or off in an instant. It is part of who you are. To not be nice is to be you. And you know you can’t be someone you’re not.

Being nice can be a burden. You end up making a decision because it’s a nice decision, right or wrong be damned. You become afraid of hurting other’s feeling because that’s not nice. So you go out of your way to do something to make others feel better. You may compromise yourself in the process, but you assure yourself, “Well, others aren’t angry at me. Things don’t look that bad to me.”

Spineless. Weak. You may have heard these words hurled at you because you’re nice. I’m telling you right now that being nice demands a different kind of strength that others take for granted. When people see a nice guy, they see a pushover. But what they don’t see is that, after years of hardships caused by you being nice, you still are. You’re not a pushover. In fact, while people keep pushing you, you still manage to maintain your balance and continue standing.

If you’re looking for a cure or a way out, then I’m telling you now that there isn’t. Instead, I offer you these words:

You have to be okay.

This is not a pessimistic statement, nor a sad resignation towards your fate. These are the words that you must hold on to in order to make sense of everything. You can quit and just shut yourself from the world. Press the reset button, if you will. But you’re nice. There’s no reset button for that.

You have to be okay.

If you’re not okay, then you’re betraying the very fabric of your existence. You deny yourself from feeling the beauty that is out there. You deprive yourself from living your life to the fulfilling. And that’s not nice.

You have to be okay. Because being nice is okay. Don’t let people make you think otherwise. Admit to yourself these things and just be nice in the best way you can possibly be.

The Amazing Spiderman 2: Crap Review »

This is arguably the best Spiderman film. Much better than the 2012 film that jumpstarted the franchise and stands toe to toe with Sam Raimi’s Spiderman 2, in my opinion. But, while I believe that the Jesus Christ allegory in Spiderman 2 is the franchise’s best moment, TAS2 is stronger from top to bottom.

Not to say that this is a cinematic masterpiece, but the film accurately captured the Spiderman lore in all its awkward and beautiful teenage glory. Much of the film spent on Peter’s relationship with Gwen Stacy - the pains, cheesiness, and the confused transition to adulthood. It is not for everyone, but it is what makes Spiderman the flawed hero that he is.

Sally Fields was a delight. Her effort to make ends meet and her heartfelt moment with Peter emphasized on the dynamics between two broken people struggling to make ends meet. More Sally Fields on the third installment, please.

Dubstep was played when Electro was on the screen. You’d think electronica would be played during his fight scenes with Spidey. But then again, it’s no longer the ’90s.

The fight between the Green Goblin was heart-stopping and ended in heartbreak. It is in this daring moment that defines the latest franchise of Spiderman - uncompromising, refreshing, and unbelievably hopeful. Tobey who?

PLDT MyBro: Customer Disservice »

I have been a PLDT MyBro subscriber for the past four months. I signed up for their 499 promo last December. Prior to subscribing, I never read any reviews about their service.

To be fair, I have been a Smart canopy subscriber at our old house since 2007 and never had any problems with it up until now. Since PLDT and Smart have merged, I expected the same thing with MyBro.

Big mistake.

Days after signing up for MyBro, I started experiencing intermittent internet connection. I called their customer support hotline and did all the possible troubleshooting to regain connection. Checked internet speed, plugged and unplugged the device, transferred location of the device outside for better connection. All those did not work.

There were times that I had connection but it only lasted around five minutes in a day throughout December.

By January, there was complete network error. Can’t connect using the browser. I called their customer service multiple times, each call clocking in around 30 minutes. Their reason for the connection problem? They were having issues with their base tower and won’t provide a date when this will be resolved.

I tried cancelling my account with MyBro but because of their lock-n period, I never went through with it. So for me to get rid of their unreliable internet connection, I have to pay them? Fuhgetaboutit.

What makes this even more frustrating is the fact that I earn money online. I had to endure days without working. And for me to be able to work is to go to my old house with the Smart MyBro or go to an internet cafe, both of which are inconvenient.

And so I waited for 25 days so they can restore the connection. All the pent-up rage seemed to have dissipated even though MyBro still has its moments of poor internet connectivity. Nonetheless, I applied for a rebate for the past 25 days of no connection.

Two months have passed and the rebate still did not reflect on the bill.

Begrudginly, I had to call their customer support to report this issue. Apparently, they disapproved my rebate application because there were no record of me reporting connection problems.

You have got to be fucking kidding me.

Keeping my composure, I was forced to reapply for a rebate which would hopefully reflect on next month’s bill.

But the damage haa been done. PLDT MyBro provides terrible internet connection and an ever poorer customer support. There is no redeeming quality with this particular service.

I have to single out the customer support for being unsupportive and totally incompetent in helping me out. Every call felt like a chore and they keep running the same troubleshooting guide as if they’re not listening. I’m pretty sure that the product is the root cause of the problem, but talking to their customer support made it even worse.

tl;dr don’t subscribe to PLDT MyBro unless you want to punish yourselves. And I really hope they can improve their customer support.

I casually watched Asia’s Next Top Model cycle 2 with my wife. I saw last night’s finale in which Sheena from Malaysia won against the 2 Filipina finalists.

Just like any Filipino viewer, I wanted either Jodilly or Katarina to win. And despite neither winning the title of Asia’s Next Top Model, both performed admirably and have nothing to be ashamed of.

In true embarrasing Filipino fashion, unfortunately, Pinoy netizens had to berate the winner, even going as far to call Sheena ugly and claim that she won simply because she was Malaysian. (The contest took place in Malaysia and the unfortunate events surrounding the Malaysian airplane that went missing may have factored into the decisions of the judges.)

Nakakaputangina lang. Tapos pag nanalo naman ang pinoy, magsisipagsulputan yung lecheng #pinoypride na yan. As if may kinalaman yung taong yun kung bakit nanalo yung pambato ng bansa natin.

Favor lang, mag-isip naman please? Nanalo si sheena dahil maganda yung photo nya at more than sufficient yung catwalk (although mas nagustuhan ko yung kay jodilly). It was essentially a toss up between jodilly and sheena in the end, so while winning the grand prize is the main goal, it won’t really matter in the long run because they already won over the viewers with their performance, regardless of how cliché that sounds.

Fak. Affected ako.
